Teen Russian skater who failed drug test allowed to continue to compete in Beijing Olympics

An international body ruled Monday the Russian teenaged Olympic skater who failed a pre-Winter Games drug test can continue to compete in Beijing, allowing her to try for a second gold medal. 

The decision by the Court of Arbitration for Sport was provisional, ahead of full investigation later. The ruling body is based in Switzerland and establishes courts in Olympic cities for such matters.

As a result, if the 15-year-old skater, Kamila Valieva, finished in the top three, neither she or any of the others will be permitted to participate in a medal ceremony, according to the Associated Press. Valieva was cleared less than 12 hours after a hastily arranged hearing that lasted into early Monday morning

A panel of judges for the court ruled Valieva, the favorite for the women’s individual gold medal competition, did not need to be provisionally suspended before a full investigation. The court made the decision in part because Valieva is a minor, the wire service also reports.
