Tropical Storm Moke brings new flood threat to Hawaii as residents recover from Hurricane Lala

Tropical Storm Moke swept south of Hawaii’s Big Island on Sunday, bringing another round of heavy rain to communities still struggling to recover from Hurricane Lala’s destructive passage just days earlier.

Forecasters warned that Moke could dump more than a foot of rain in some areas, raising concerns about renewed flooding and mudslides across parts of the Big Island where the ground was already saturated and infrastructure had been damaged by Lala.

The National Weather Service said the storm was expected to produce widespread rainfall, with the heaviest totals focused on the island’s windward and southeastern areas. Some isolated locations could receive significantly higher amounts, creating the potential for dangerous flash flooding.
