Texas GOP Rep. Chip Roy introduced a bill Thursday that seeks to designate the Council on American Islamic Relations and its affiliates as specially designated global terrorists and revoke its nonprofit status.

The legislation seeks to label CAIR as a Hamas affiliate and prohibit Americans from dealing with the organization, which is considered one of the largest Muslim Civil Rights advocacy groups in the country.

A summary of the legislation shared with the Daily Signal claims CAIR has ties to multiple terrorist organizations, including Hamas and the Muslim Brotherhood and acts under the guise of a nonprofit.

"CAIR is not some innocent 501(c)(3) organization—they facilitate terrorism while operating under the guise of a nonprofit,” Roy told The Daily Signal. “This bill makes it clear: their assets must be frozen, their tax-exempt status revoked, and all Americans should be prohibited from supporting them.

"No organization that aids terrorism should financially benefit from it, especially on U.S. soil," he added.

The move comes after Florida and Texas both labeled CAIR and the Muslim Brotherhood as foreign terrorist organizations last year, which forbids both organizations and their affiliates from purchasing or acquiring land in either state.
