Comer pulls Comey subpoena in Epstein probe after former FBI director says he has no information

“At no time during my service at the Department of Justice or the FBI do I recall any information or conversations that related to Jeffrey Epstein or Ghislaine Maxwell,” Comey wrote in a letter to the panel, dated Oct. 1.

House Oversight Chairman James Comer on Monday withdrew his subpoena for former FBI Director James Comey's deposition over the House Republican investigation into the late, disgraced financier Jeffrey Epstein.

Comer subpoenaed Comey as part of his probe in August, and the former FBI chief was expected to sit for the deposition on Tuesday. However, Comey sent Comer a letter last week that stated he had no “knowledge” or “information relevant to the Committee’s investigation.”

“I offer this letter in lieu of a deposition that would unproductively consume the Committee’s scarce time and resources,” Comey wrote, The Hill reported.

Comey served as deputy attorney general from 2003 through 2005 and as FBI director from 2013 through 2017. Both periods are being investigated by the committee, but Comey was not FBI director when Epstein was arrested in 2019.

“At no time during my service at the Department of Justice or the FBI do I recall any information or conversations that related to Jeffrey Epstein or Ghislaine Maxwell,” Comey wrote in the letter, dated Oct. 1.

Comer accepted the letter and pulled Comey's deposition because the letter is subject to a provision in federal law that makes it illegal to knowingly lie to government agents and officials.

The Oversight panel has additionally subpoenaed Epstein's estate and former President Bill Clinton and his wife, former Secretary of State Hillary Clinton, as part of its probe into the government's handling of the Epstein investigation.
