Congressional Republicans introduce 'Gas Can Freedom Act' to rollback Obama-era red tape
Banks said the new legislation, titled the "Gas Can Freedom Act," will restore consumer choice in the cans by repealing the ban and will help keep federal politics out of the lives of ordinary Americans.
Republican Indiana Sen. Jim Banks and Texas GOP Rep. Chip Roy on Wednesday unveiled new legislation aimed at rolling back Obama-era mandates on gas cans.
The Obama administration's Environmental Protection Agency (EPA) in 2009 replaced traditional vented metal gas cans with rigid, non-vented plastic cans and banned the metal ones.
Banks said the new legislation, titled the "Gas Can Freedom Act," will restore consumer choice in the cans by repealing the ban and will help keep federal politics out of the lives of ordinary Americans.
“My bill ends an Obama-era rule that made it harder to do something as simple as mow the lawn," Banks said in a statement. "It’s time to cut the red tape and stop the overregulation of everyday life. Bring back common sense gas cans!”
The bill comes after the Trump administration's EPA launched a “Make Gas Cans Great Again” initiative in July that encouraged manufacturers to reintroduce self-closing vents on gas cans.
