Democratic lawmakers decry Trump's Venezuela operation as 'impeachable offense'
The Trump administration has pushed back on claims that the operation was a military action or invasion, stating that it was law enforcement because U.S. forces were arresting Maduro and his wife.
A couple of Democratic lawmakers over the weekend claimed that the United States' decision to arrest former Venezuelan leader Nicolás Maduro without Congressional approval was an "impeachable offense," that violated the Constitution.
The Trump administration has pushed back on claims that the operation was a military action or invasion, stating that it was law enforcement because U.S. forces were arresting Maduro and his wife, who have been indicted in the Southern District of New York on drug trafficking and weapons charges.
New York Democratic Rep. Dan Goldman on Saturday called for House Republicans to join the chamber's Democrats in impeaching President Donald Trump over the operation.
"President Trump’s unauthorized military action in Venezuela is unconstitutional, dangerous, and an impeachable abuse of power," Goldman wrote on X. "Congress alone has the authority to declare war and Trump is once again ignoring the law to serve his own interests."
Illinois Democratic Rep. Delia Ramirez also supported calls for Trump to be impeached and urged lawmakers to pass Minnesota Democratic Rep. Ilhan Omar's War Powers resolution, which failed in both chambers last year.
"Many Americans woke up to a sick sense of deja vu," Ramirez said in a Saturday post on X. "Under the guise of liberty, an administration of warmongers has lied to justify an invasion and is dragging us into an illegal, endless war so they can extract resources and expand their wealth."
Other Democratic lawmakers have claimed that the operation violated U.S. law but did not call for Trump to be impeached. If the House did impeach the president, the Republican-led Senate would still need to vote to remove him from office.
