Fetterman pushes Trump admin to end nuclear negotiations with Iran, destroy facilities instead
The senator said he believes the current administration only has a narrow window to wipe out Iran's nuclear facilities, after the U.S. knocked down some of Iran's proxies.
Pennsylvania Democratic Sen. John Fetterman this week urged the Trump administration to end its negotiations on a nuclear deal with the Iranian regime, and to destroy its nuclear facilities in a military strike instead.
Fetterman, a moderate Democrat who has been willing to work with the Republican administration in certain areas, has been one of the biggest liberal congressional supporters of Israel during its war with the Iran-backed Hamas terrorist organization.
The senator told the Washington Free Beacon on Wednesday that he believes the current administration only has a narrow window to wipe out Iran's nuclear facilities. Iran has suffered some setbacks recently after Israel and the U.S. knocked down some of its proxies.
"You're never going to be able to negotiate with that kind of regime that has been destabilizing the region for decades already," Fetterman told the outlet. "Now we have an incredible window, I believe, to do that, to strike and destroy Iran's nuclear facilities."
The comment comes after the United States and Iran agreed to discuss the Middle Eastern country's nuclear program. President Donald Trump has favored a more diplomatic approach to dealing with Iran so far, but has repeatedly emphasized that Iran cannot have nuclear weapons.
Some critics have expressed concern about a military approach, warning it could lead to a bigger regional war with Iran. But Fetterman claimed they had been wrong about the strength of Iran's proxies like Hamas and Hezbollah.
"It's not going to turn into World War III. It's the acknowledgment that we'll never have a better opportunity," Fetterman said. "They've been saying for years and years that Hezbollah was the ultimate badass that kept Israel in check, and we can't move on anything beyond that.
"Hamas, literally, [is] just a bunch of tunnel rats with junky rockets in the back of a Toyota truck," he continued. "Now the Houthis have been effectively neutered as well. So what's left? You have Iran, and they have a nuclear facility, and it's clearly only for weapons."
