Florida Democrat Sheila Cherfilus-McCormick filed for re-election days before resigning from House

In the days leading up to her decision to resign from Congress, Rep. Sheila Cherfilus-McCormick quietly filed paperwork to run for reelection.

The Florida Democrat submitted her candidacy to state officials on April 17, less than one week before announcing her resignation in April 2026. 

At the time, she was facing a House Ethics Committee probe, which examined allegations tied to her campaign finances and use of federal funds.

Lawmakers on the bipartisan panel were preparing to recommend punishment after concluding she had committed numerous violations, including improper campaign financing and false financial disclosures.
