Hawaii's Brian Schatz locks in support to replace Durbin as Senate minority whip in 2027
If elected to the post next year, it would mark the biggest shake-up for Senate Democrats since Schumer became leader after the 2016 election.
Hawaii Democratic Sen. Brian Schatz on Tuesday appeared to have the necessary support from his fellow lawmakers to replace Senate Minority Whip Dick Durbin in the post in 2027, after Durbin steps down at the end of next year.
Schatz formally announced his bid to replace Durbin in April, stating that he felt the role was where he could best help the party. The Hawaii Democrat currently serves as the Chief Deputy Whip.
The Hawaiian has also reportedly earned support from Senate Minority Leader Chuck Schumer. If elected to the post next year, it would mark the biggest shake-up for Senate Democrats since Schumer became leader after the 2016 election.
“I’m grateful for the support from so many of my colleagues. I intend to continue earning their support in the months to come,” Schatz told The Hill.
Durbin has already announced he would not seek reelection in order to pass the torch to a younger generation, and has been in the post since 2005.
