House Republican introduces resolution to boot New Jersey Democrat Reps from committees over protest
Authorities claim this went well beyond a peaceful protest, as the three members of Congress allegedly stormed the facility, and Newark Mayor Ras Baraka was arrested and charged with trespassing.
Georgia GOP Rep. Buddy Carter on Tuesday introduced a one-page resolution that seeks to remove three New Jersey Democratic lawmakers from their respective committees, after they took part in a protest last week.
Reps. Bonnie Watson Coleman, Rob Menendez and LaMonica McIver participated in a protest at a U.S. Immigration and Customs Enforcement facility in Newark, New Jersey, last Friday.
Authorities claim this went well beyond a peaceful protest, as the three members of Congress allegedly stormed the facility, and Newark Mayor Ras Baraka was arrested and charged with trespassing. Authorities also allege that an ICE agent was assaulted.
Carter proposed booting Coleman from her post on the Appropriations Committee, Menendez from his assignment on the Energy and Commerce Committee, and McIver from her roles on the Homeland Security and Small Business committees.
"The radical left has lost their minds - they would rather raid an ICE facility to defend criminal illegal immigrants than represent their own constituents," Carter said in a post on X. "The three Democratic members involved in this stunt do not deserve to sit on committees alongside serious lawmakers."
The step would not be as big as arresting the lawmakers, which a Department of Homeland Security spokesperson suggested, but would be a major increase in tensions between the two parties.
Although an escalation in tensions, the move would also not be unprecedented. Republicans removed three Democratic lawmakers from various posts in the last Congress, and Democrats removed GOP Reps. Paul Gosar of Arizona and Marjorie Taylor Greene of Georgia from their posts before that.
