House Republicans pass resolution denouncing socialism

The House of Representatives on Tuesday night passed a resolution that denounces socialism, as the country witnesses a surge in socialism among Democratic voters.

The recent clear rise in socialism began with the election of New York City's socialist Mayor Zohran Mamdani last year, who scored a slew of victories earlier this year when a string of his candidates won their respective primaries for U.S. congressional districts.

The House adopted the resolution in a 220-192-2 split, which saw eight Democrats voting with all Republicans in favor, according to CBS News. Two Democrats voted present. 

The legislation calls for lawmakers to condemn and denounce “socialism in all its forms,” including the Democratic Socialists of America movement, and to oppose the implementation of socialist policies in the U.S.

“The DSA candidate platform stands in direct contrast to our republic,” Colorado GOP Rep. Jeff Crank said ahead of the vote. “Getting rid of the United States Senate, open borders, defunding the police, allowing non-citizens to vote in federal elections — those aren’t consistent with our Constitution. DSA is an insidious movement within the Democratic Party.” 

The eight Democrats who voted with all Republicans in support of the resolution are Reps. Kathy Castor of Florida, Vicente Gonzalez of Texas, Henry Cuellar of Texas, Darren Soto of Florida, Jared Golden of Maine, Marie Gluesenkamp Perez of Washington, Don Davis of North Carolina and Gabe Vasquez of New Mexico.

Democratic Reps. Chrissy Houlahan of Pennsylvania and Maggie Goodlander of New Hampshire voted present.
