House Steering Committee elects Andrew Garbarino to lead Homeland Security Committee
Garbarino beat out Reps. Michael Guest of Mississippi, Carlos Giménez of Florida and Clay Higgins of Louisiana for the post after two rounds of voting.
The House Steering Committee on Monday night chose New York GOP Rep. Andrew Garbarino to replace former House Homeland Security Chairman Mark Green as the top Republican on the prominent panel.
Garbarino beat out Reps. Michael Guest of Mississippi, Carlos Giménez of Florida and Clay Higgins of Louisiana for the post after two rounds of voting, per Politico.
The New Yorker focused his pitch on his background in cybersecurity policy, and is currently the chairman of the House Homeland Cybersecurity and Infrastructure Protection subcommittee. Garbarino also served as an impeachment manager in the case against former Homeland Security Secretary Alejandro Mayorkas.
The move comes after Green resigned his post earlier this year for a job in the private sector. The resignation came after he helped pass President Donald Trump's "One Big Beautiful Bill" last month. He had served in the post since 2023, and was first elected to Congress in 2018.
