House Ways and Means Chairman Jason Smith on Tuesday celebrated former Georgia gubernatorial candidate Stacey Abrams' nonprofit New Georgia Project shutting down, declaring it was a "huge" win for American voters.

Abrams founded the New Georgia Project in 2013, before she ran for governor. She lost to Georgia GOP Gov. Brian Kemp in both 2018 and 2022.

The nonprofit and its affiliate, the New Georgia Project Action Fund, announced they were shutting down last month. The groups did not specify why they were closing, but it comes after the nonprofit was fined $300,000 earlier this year for not disclosing its campaign contributions to Abrams' candidacy for governor in 2018.

Smith, who led investigations into allegations that the company abused its tax-exempt status, said both groups dissolving was the "right outcome."

"It's a huge win and a right win for American people," Smith said on the "Just The News, No Noise" TV show. "This was an organization that we looked into as Ways and Means chairman. The Ways and Means has jurisdiction over the entire tax code, and when you look at these not-for-profits that are abusing their tax-exempt status, that's a problem. We had numerous examples of the fraud that was going on there, and [I'm] glad they're dissolving. It's the right place, right outcome."

The groups helped register and mobilize Georgia voters in recent elections, particularly in communities of color, according to Fox-5 Atlanta.
