Mike Johnson says 2026 marks a 'pivotal moment' in American history

House Speaker Mike Johnson told voters in Dallas, Texas, on Thursday night that 2026 and the upcoming midterms mark a "pivotal moment" in American history and urged Republicans to vote in November.

The speech comes during the second night of the Republican convention in Texas. The two-night event features speeches from conservative heavy hitters including President Donald Trump and Vice President JD Vance.

Johnson touted some of the Trump administration's and House Republicans' recent successes, but emphasized the historic moment of the midterms.

"Thank you all for being here at this pivotal moment. It is truly a pivotal moment in the history of our nation," he said. "After 250 years, what we do in the next 53 days will determine the fate of the republic and the future for our children and our grandchildren. This is serious, serious business. 

"We are here because we are facing the most important midterm election that has ever been," he continued. "In this election, on America's 250th anniversary, it now falls to us to fight to preserve the country that we all love."

Johnson said the United States is being "attacked from within," and that Americans should be more wary of the Democrats who claim they are for common sense only to vote with socialists when elected. 

"This is a new Democrat Party," he insisted. "We know who the Mamdanis and the El-Sayeds are. But it's the Democrats in the swing seats who say one thing and then join forces with the socialists they're afraid of that is the dangerous part."

The House speaker told voters that the question they need to ask is "which party's candidates and policies are better for me and my family?" 

"The contrast has never been more clear," he stated. "We have a split screen: Republicans delivering and Democrats radicalizing and that is the contrast for America. That is what we're facing. It is a contrast between Republicans who deliver common sense, and Democrats who do the opposite." 

The speaker's speech comes just 54 days before the midterm elections, which will take place Nov. 3.
