Minnesota Democratic Rep teases bid for next year's open Senate seat

Minnesota Democratic Rep. Angie Craig on Monday said that she is considering running for an open Senate seat next year, now that Minnesota Sen. Tina Smith, a Democrat, announced she was not seeking reelection.

Smith made the announcement last week, stating that she desired to spend more time with her family, even though she "loved" her time in the upper chamber. Smith has served in the seat since former Democratic Sen. Al Franken resigned over allegations of sexual misconduct in 2018.

Craig, who was one of the first Democrats to call on President Joe Biden to drop his bid for reelection last year, said she had not made a final decision on whether to seek the seat, but would be talking to constituents about it in the future.

“I am giving serious consideration to the open Senate seat in Minnesota,” Craig wrote on X. “I’ll be talking to Minnesotans in the weeks ahead about the best way to continue to serve my community and will make a decision in the near future.”

Craig has represented Minnesota's second district in the lower chamber since 2019. Minnesota is considered a blue-leaning state, which President Donald Trump lost in 2016 by 1.5 percentage points, and by four points in 2024 when the state's Democratic governor, Tim Walz, was the vice presidential running mate of Kamala Harris.
