Senate advances groundwork for passing Trump's tax agenda

The Senate on Thursday night voted to begin discussion on its budget resolution, which is considered a blueprint for President Donald Trump's tax agenda and other major priorities, in a 52-48 split. 

The resolution includes framework instructions for how both chambers can eventually pass a bill through budget reconciliation, which would bypass a filibuster, according to The Hill. 

The vote on the resolution was initially delayed on Thursday after Senate leadership did not have the votes necessary to begin debate. But  Senate Majority John Thune eventually secured the necessary support to advance the bill. 

“There’s, like there always is, questions, and this is complicated stuff,” Thune told reporters. “People want to do their homework and want to be really informed when they make a decision. We were hearing folks out and obviously giving them a chance to want to explain their concerns and hopefully get some questions answered, and just make sure everybody had a comfort level with proceeding."
