Senate Democrats block government funding bill in 13th vote
The government shutdown has reached its 28th day
Senate Democrats on Tuesday blocked the House-passed government funding bill in the chamber's 13th vote on the measure, ensuring the government shutdown continues.
The bill would fund the government through Nov. 21 if passed with 60 votes. The measure failed by a 54-45 vote, The Hill news outlet reported. The government shutdown has reached its 28th day.
Just three Democratic caucus members voted for the bill: Sens. John Fetterman of Pennsylvania, Catherine Cortez Masto of Nevada, and Angus King of Maine, an independent who caucuses with Democrats.
Senate Minority Leader Chuck Schumer said ahead of the vote that Republicans need to negotiate an extension of expiring Obamacare health insurance subsidies for the government shutdown to end. The open enrollment period for Obamacare starts on Saturday.
“Republicans do not even want to talk about fixing health care. Americans are on the brink of a health care crisis unlike we have seen in our lifetimes,” Schumer said.
Lawmakers from both political parties have also warned that Supplemental Nutrition Assistance Program benefits will begin to expire on Saturday. Meanwhile, Treasury Secretary Scott Bessent said over the weekend that the Trump administration would not have enough funds to cover military service members' paychecks on Nov. 15.
