The Senate Finance Committee on Tuesday advanced former Missouri GOP Rep. Billy Long's nomination to lead the Internal Revenue Service to a floor vote, in a party-line split.
President Donald Trump nominated Long for the position late last year, after winning the 2024 presidential election, highlighting the former lawmaker's 12-year tenure in the House. Long has also spent 32 years in real estate, and worked as an auctioneer.
The Senate committee advanced the nomination in a 14-13 vote.
"I applaud the Committee’s action today and look forward to working with [Long] to ensure the IRS helps taxpayers fulfill their responsibilities and enforces the law with integrity and fairness," Senate Finance Chairman Mike Crapo said in a statement.
Democrats on the committee, including Ranking Member Ron Wyden, have blasted Long's nomination over a lack of experience in developing tax policies.
"Senate Finance Republicans just rubber-stamped Trump's IRS nominee," Wyden posted to X. "Billy Long has no tax policy experience..."
