Besides funding for border security, the resolution also extends Trump's 2017 tax cuts.

The full Senate voted Tuesday night to move forward with a $300 billion-plus budget resolution to advance President Donald Trump's agenda.

The 50-47 vote in the GOP-controlled chamber starts consideration on the fiscal 2025 budget resolution, which the Senate Budget Committee advanced last week, according to The Hill newspaper.

The resolution, brought forth by South Carolina GOP Sen. Lindsey Graham, aims to increase funding for defense and border security and domestic energy incentives. The measure is being referred to a "skinning budget" because it does not include extending Trump's 2017 tax cuts like the House's version.

Under Senate rules, the measure can be passed in the 100-member chamber with a simple, 51-vote majority.

Senate Republicans appear to think the best way to advance Trump's agenda is to get a fast, early win to fund the president's top priorities, then attempt to extend the tax cuts.

"OMB Director Vought and Border Czar Homan told Senate Republicans that ICE is running out of money," Graham wrote on the social media platform, X. "We’ve got to keep our foot on the gas."

House Republicans appear to think the best way is to pass one big resolution with the tax extension, amid concerns they might not get an opportunity to pass a second, separate resolution.

"The House budget resolution implements President Trump’s FULL America First agenda, not just parts of it with promises to come back later for the rest," House Speaker Mike Johnson, R-La., wrote on X.

Congress has until March 14 to pass a bill before government funding runs out.
