Rep. Carlos Gimenez, chairman of the House Subcommittee on Transportation and Maritime Security, says that the suspected partnership between the Chinese Communist Party and Cuba is "one of the most brazen intelligence operations ever attempted near the American mainland."

The Florida Republican made the comment Tuesday at the panel's “Beijing’s Air, Space, and Maritime Surveillance from Cuba: A Growing Threat to the Homeland" hearing.

"Mounting evidence suggests that the Chinese Communist Party is expanding its strategic partnership with the totalitarian communist regime in Cuba to build advanced surveillance infrastructure capable of targeting the United States," he said.

Gimenez also said he sent a letter to the Department of Homeland Security in March, asking for an investigation into individuals in the U.S. with suspected links to Cuban intelligence and the Communist Party. He added that he sent a letter last month to the Department of the Treasury, calling for U.S.-Cuba travel to be completely suspended except for appropriate humanitarian purposes.
