Three sanctuary state governors to testify in front of House Oversight next month
The hearing will feature testimony from Illinois Gov. JB Pritzker, Minnesota Gov. Tim Walz, and New York Gov. Kathy Hochul, all Democrats, on June 12.
House Oversight and Government Reform Committee Chairman James Comer on Tuesday announced the governors of Illinois, Minnesota and New York will testify in front of his committee about their sanctuary state policies next month.
The hearing is part of the committee's investigation into various sanctuary jurisdiction policies, and their impact on public safety. Sanctuary cities and states primarily vow not to cooperate with federal immigration officials in order to protect their citizens, who are in the country illegally, from deportation.
The hearing will feature testimony from Illinois Gov. JB Pritzker, Minnesota Gov. Tim Walz, and New York Gov. Kathy Hochul, all Democrats, on June 12.
“Sanctuary policies only provide sanctuaries for criminal illegal aliens," Comer said in a statement. "Former President [Joe] Biden created the worst border crisis in U.S. history and allowed criminal illegal aliens to flood our communities. President [Donald] Trump has ended this crisis and now we have the most secure borders in decades.
"The Trump administration is taking decisive action to deport criminal illegal aliens from our nation but reckless sanctuary states like Illinois, Minnesota, and New York are actively seeking to obstruct federal immigration enforcement," he continued. "The governors of these states must explain why they are prioritizing the protection of criminal illegal aliens over the safety of U.S. citizens, and they must be held accountable."
The governors will also provide documents and communications related to their states’ sanctuary policies.
The hearing comes after the Democratic mayors of New York City, Boston, Chicago, and Denver testified in front of the committee last month.
