Sen. Chris Van Hollen, D-Md., said on Friday that the margaritas seen on the table during his meeting with Kilmar Abrego Garcia in El Salvador were placed there by someone with the government.

"President Trump was asked at the White House today about what I would call Margaritagate," he said during a news conference at Dulles Airport upon his arrival. "Nobody drank any margaritas or sugar water or whatever it is."

Van Hollen argued that the situation demonstrates the "lengths" that President Bukele will go to "deceive people about what’s going on."

El Salvador President Nayib Bukele had posted photos of the drinks on the table, saying that the senator and Abrego Garcia were "sipping margaritas."

Van Hollen met with Abrego Garcia on Thursday night at a hotel in El Salvador.

Abrego Garcia, who was living in Maryland illegally, was deported to El Salvador under the Trump administration and placed in prison there.

Van Hollen argued that Abrego Garcia is guaranteed due process under the U.S. Constitution.
