Brazil's Supreme Court on Monday ordered former President Jair Bolsonaro to be placed on house arrest after he allegedly violated a precautionary court order that instructed him not to post on social media ahead of his upcoming trial.

Bolsonaro has been accused of plotting to overturn the results of the 2022 presidential election to stay in power, which he denies, and of conspiring with the U.S. government to impose sanctions against Brazilian officials. He has been banned from speaking to foreign officials, approaching embassies, and using social media ahead of the trial.

Supreme Court Justice Alexandre de Moraes ruled that the former president violated the court order by posting content on his son’s social media channels, according to the Associated Press.

The order comes after Bolsonaro was ordered to wear an ankle monitor while his case is pending, because he is perceived to be a flight risk. De Moraes on Monday said the monitor must stay on and only lawyers and family members are allowed to visit him. All electronic devices have also been seized.

The United States has slammed Brazil for the prosecution, claiming it violates "human rights," and imposed a travel ban on de Moraes and his allies over the alleged political prosecution.
