The nonprofit claims that Asana rejected its request for the 50% discount the provider offers nonprofits for its project management software, because “organizations that are ... religious … in nature aren’t eligible," lawyers say.

The Alliance Defending Freedom (ADF) filed a lawsuit on Tuesday on behalf of a Christian nonprofit, alleging a California technology company declined to give them a discount because they were religious.

The public interest law firm claimed the technology company Asana discriminated against the nonprofit Holy Sexuality, which creates videos to teach Christians about biblical principles on human sexuality. The videos come amid a national debate on gender identity and sexual orientation.

The nonprofit claims that Asana rejected its request for a 50% discount that the provider offers nonprofits on its project management software because “organizations that are ... religious … in nature aren’t eligible," according to ADF.

The rejection is in line with a policy Asana states on its website that it will not grant discounts to any organization "that exist to solely propagate a belief in a specific faith.”

“Christians and other people of faith aren’t second-class citizens in California, and San Francisco tech companies can’t refuse discounts to customers simply because they’re religious,” ADF Legal Counsel Mathew Hoffmann said in a statement.

“We are urging the court to affirm our client Holy Sexuality’s fundamental freedom of religion, declare Asana’s discriminatory denial and policy unlawful, and require Asana to grant Holy Sexuality the nonprofit discount," he added.

ADF lawyers argued that the policy and the rejection are examples of religious discrimination under California's Civil Rights Act, which ensures equal treatment for all Californians, no matter their religion.

“Our nation was founded on the principle of the free exercise of religion—a cornerstone of our democracy,” Holy Sexuality founder Dr. Christopher Yuan said. “Yet some corporations, emboldened by intersectional ideology and anti-Christian sentiment, choose to unlawfully discriminate based solely on religion. This must stop. California law protects all religions from discrimination. Equal treatment is the bedrock of our society.”
