Justice Department pursuing investigation in 2022 Supreme Court abortion ruling leak: sources
Some conservatives believe the source of the leak was an abortion-rights supporter who was hoping to derail the ruling, a theory President Donald Trump has voiced.
The Justice Department is reportedly pursuing a criminal investigation into how the Supreme Court's 2022 decision overturning the right to abortion was leaked to the press.
Two months before the high court released the decision, someone provided a draft of the ruling to Politico. The leak was an unprecedented breach of the institution, which has operated in secrecy and resisted oversight from other branches of government.
In recent weeks, the investigation has kicked into high gear as prosecutors sent grand jury subpoenas for testimony and sought information from people who worked at the court at the time of the leaks, the New York Times reported, citing unnamed sources.
U.S. Attorney Jeanine Pirro, is overseeing the investigation, and she has assigned one of her top lieutenants to the investigation, along with several career prosecutors.
It's not clear if the investigation has developed new evidence pointing to the source of the leak, or what laws prosecutors believe may have been broken as a result. Potentially relevant laws have five-year statutes of limitations that would expire this spring.
