Bannon pleads guilty in border wall fraud case, avoids jail time
Due to Bannon pleading guilty, he will avoid jail time.
Former Trump White House chief strategist Steve Bannon pleaded guilty Tuesday in connection with a plot to defraud donors for building the southern U.S. border wall.
Bannon was charged in September 2022 for working with an organization that raised millions of dollars to privately fund the wall promised by President Donald Trump.
In a New York courtroom Tuesday, Bannon pleaded guilty to one state count of scheming to defraud in the first degree. He won't serve time behind bars under the plea agreement
The group, "We Build the Wall," is a New York nonprofit, and donors were reportedly defrauded for about $15 million in donations.
In exchange for the guilty plea, Bannon, who remains a popular MAGA personality, with his "War Room" podcast, received a conditional discharge for three years and will not be allowed to serve as a director of a nonprofit in New York, according to CBS News.
