Supreme Court allows Trump to enforce trans military ban

The Supreme Court on Tuesday allowed the Trump administration to enforce a ban on transgender service members in the military.

The decision overruled a lower court judge who imposed a stay and the Department of Defense will be able to enforce it while legal challenges proceed, Reuters reported.

Trump previously imposed limited restrictions on transgender military service in his first term, though the current ban goes further. In January, Trump signed an executive order stating that "expressing a false 'gender identity' divergent from an individual’s sex cannot satisfy the rigorous standards necessary for military service."

The ban faced blocks from multiple judges, including Washington, D.C.-based U.S. District Judge Ana Reyes, who deemed it unconstitutional.
