The Supreme Court is set to hear arguments in a case brought by Catholic preschools.

St. Mary Catholic Parish and the Archdiocese of Denver argue it's unconstitutional that they were excluded from a state-funded program due to their admissions policies for LGBT families, the Associated Press reported.

The state of Colorado argues the schools' refusal to admit kids from those families violates the state's anti-discrimination law.

The plaintiffs, represented by the group Becket Fund for Religious Liberty, argue that their admissions policy is based on religious teachings about same-sex marriage and that by excluding them, Colorado is violating their rights to freedom of religion.

They also point out that the state has permitted other preschools to prioritize children with disabilities or those from low-income families. Therefore, they argue, admission based on religious beliefs about gender and same-sex marriage should also be allowed under state law.
