Texas teenager Karmelo Anthony was indicted by a grand jury on Tuesday and charged with first-degree murder for the death of fellow 17-year-old Austin Metcalf.

Anthony allegedly fatally stabbed Metcalf during a high school track meet in April, after the victim told Anthony that he was sitting in the wrong area.

Anthony, who will be tried as an adult despite being 17, faces up to life in prison if convicted.

“For weeks, my team has been presenting evidence to the grand jury," Collin County District Attorney Greg Willis said at a press conference. "Today, I summarized that evidence, and I asked the Grand Jury to return a first-degree murder indictment against Karmelo Anthony, which they did."

A witness allegedly told local police that Metcalf grabbed Anthony at one point in the altercation to get him to move after Anthony reportedly dared him. Anthony then allegedly pulled a knife on Metcalf and stabbed him once in the chest before running away, per the Daily Wire.

Anthony's attorney Mike Howard argued his client was acting in self-defense.

“We are confident that when all the facts are presented and the full story is heard, the jury will reach the right conclusion and justice will be done,” Howard said.
