At G-20 Summit, US, allies back draft resolution condemning Russia invasion of Ukraine

The United States and its allies at the G-20 backed a resolution Tuesday condemning Russia's invasion of Ukraine.

The summit is the first meeting of G20 leaders since Russia sent its troops into Ukraine in February, according to Reuters. 

"Most members strongly condemned the war in Ukraine and stressed it is causing immense human suffering and exacerbating existing fragilities in the global economy," states the 16-page draft declaration, according to a copy seen by news outlets.

The draft, which diplomats said had yet to be adopted by the leaders, also states: "There were other views and different assessments of the situation and sanctions," said

Russian Foreign Minister Sergei Lavrov denounced the draft and said Russia had put forward an alternative view for the draft to be completed on Wednesday.

Lavrov is leading his country's delegation because Russia President Vladimir Putin did not attend the summit, being held on the Indonesian island of Bali.
