Rubio announces 10 Americans detained in Venezuela are 'on their way to freedom'
It is not clear when the Americans are expected to land back on U.S. soil, but Bukele stated that the released prisoners are on their way to El Salvador, where they will make a short stop before being sent on to their final destinations.
Secretary of State Marco Rubio on Friday announced that 10 Americans who were detained in Venezuela have since been released and are on their "way to freedom."
Rubio thanked his team for helping to secure the releases, along with El Salvador President Nayib Bukele. Bukele released Venezuelans who were detained in El Salvador back to their home country, in exchange for the Americans, and Venezuelan political prisoners.
"Thanks to [President Donald Trump's] leadership, ten Americans who were detained in Venezuela are on their way to freedom," Rubio posted to X. "I want to thank my team at the State Department & especially President [Bukele] for helping secure an agreement for the release of all of our American detainees, plus the release of Venezuelan political prisoners."
It is not clear when the Americans are expected to land back on U.S. soil, but Bukele stated that the released prisoners are on their way to El Salvador, where they will make a short stop before being sent on to their final destinations.
"This operation is the result of months of negotiations with a tyrannical regime that had long refused to release one of its most valuable bargaining chips: its hostages," Bukele posted to X. "However, thanks to the tireless efforts of many officials from both the United States and El Salvador, and above all, thanks to Almighty God, it was achieved."
