The State Department said Wednesday that four Americans were passengers aboard a FlyDubai flight to Israel that was forced to make an emergency landing in Saudi Arabia due to an altercation in the cockpit.

Several passengers on board the flight subdued a knife-carrying pilot, who stabbed the other pilot before he was restrained. The flight was carrying more than 170 passengers and crew members at the time of the incident.

FlyDubai said the underlying reasons for the event remained unknown and has warned against "premature speculation."

A State Department spokesperson confirmed the number of American passengers to Fox News and said the department is working with local authorities and stands ready to provide consular assistance to Americans aboard the flight.

The American passengers have not been identified, but no deaths were reported on the flight.
