Trump says South Africa will not be invited to 2026 G20 summit in Florida
The comment comes after the United States boycotted the 2025 economic summit in Johannesburg, South Africa, earlier this month, including by not attending the ceremonial gavel handover at the end of the summit.
President Donald Trump said Wednesday that South Africa will not be invited to the 2026 G20 summit in Florida, marking an escalation of his conflict with the country over allegations it discriminates against its white population.
The comment comes after the United States boycotted the 2025 economic summit in Johannesburg, South Africa, earlier this month, including by not attending the ceremonial gavel handover at the end of the summit. The Trump administration attempted to send a diplomat from its South African embassy in his place.
Trump accepted dozens of white South Africans into the United States as refugees earlier this year and accused South African leaders of passing racist, anti-white policies through affirmative action laws.
The president said it was country's continual denial of the alleged human rights abuses that prompted the boycott and disinvitation from next year's event.
"South Africa has demonstrated to the World they are not a country worthy of Membership anywhere, and we are going to stop all payments and subsidies to them, effective immediately," Trump wrote on Truth Social.
South African President Cyril Ramaphosa pushed back against Trump’s claim South Africa was not invited to next year’s event and said his country would remain fully invested and active in the summit.
“South Africa is a sovereign constitutional democratic country and does not appreciate insults from another country about its worth in participating in global platforms,” Ramaphosa told the New York Times. “South Africa will continue to participate as a full, active and constructive member of the G20.”
Next year's gathering will take place in December of 2026, and is expected to be held at Trump's Doral resort. National Economic Council Director Kevin Hassett will serve as the point person for the summit.
