DOJ charges suspect in National Guard ambush with first-degree murder, after one victim dies
The upgraded charges follow Guard member Sarah Beckstrom, 20, dying Wednesday in a hospital.
U.S. Attorney for the District of Columbia Jeanine Pirro on Friday said the Justice Department has upgraded the charges against the suspect in the ambush of two National Guard members, after one of them could not survive the attack.
Pirro said on the Fox News Channel: "We are upgrading the initial charges of assault to murder in the first degree."
The suspect has been identified as Rahmanullah Lakanwal, an Afghan national.
Pirro also said additional charges are coming in connection to the two Guard members being shot Wednesday near the White House, in Washington, D.C.
The upgraded charges follow Guard member Sarah Beckstrom, 20, dying Wednesday in a hospital.
