AG Bondi says Trump won't send National Guard to Chicago, going to city that 'wants us'
"They are a progressive city, and they don’t want the president’s help," Attorney General Pam Bondi said
Attorney General Pam Bondi said that President Trump won't send the National Guard to Chicago, and that troops will instead be sent to a city that "wants us."
Trump has sent the National Guard to Los Angeles and Washington, D.C., to assist with cracking down on illegal immigration and crime. He has also expressed interest in sending the Guard to Chicago, and U.S. Immigration and Customs Enforcement has started its own operation in the city. However, Democratic Illinois Gov. JB Pritzker and Chicago Mayor Brandon Johnson have pushed back on federal assistance.
Bondi on Tuesday said that the Trump administration will offer their assistance to a more receptive city, Washington Examiner reported.
“They are a progressive city, and they don’t want the president’s help. That’s on them,” Bondi said of Chicago on Tuesday night. “Chicago should be begging Donald Trump for help to keep Chicago safe — yet they aren’t. So we’re going to a city who wants us there.”
Trump said on Tuesday, “We’re going to be announcing another city that we’re going to very shortly. We’re working it out with the governor of a certain state that would love us to be there and the mayor of a certain city in the same state. We’ll announce it probably tomorrow.”
Last week, Trump suggested sending the National Guard to New Orleans instead of Chicago. New Orleans is a Democratic-led city in a GOP-led state. Trump has said that Republican Louisiana Gov. Jeff Landry has invited a possible deployment.
