Attorney General Pam Bondi on Monday issued a memorandum to various federal law enforcement agencies, directing them to send agents to help defend Immigration and Customs Enforcement (ICE) facilities after a wave of attacks.

The directive comes after one detainee died, and two others were critically wounded in a shooting last week at a Dallas ICE facility. It also comes after ICE and Border Patrol officers patrolled downtown Chicago over the weekend in an immigration crackdown operation.

The order specifically directs the FBI, United States Marshals Service, the Bureau of Alcohol, Tobacco, Firearms and Explosives and the Drug Enforcement Agency to send teams to areas of concern, including Portland and Chicago.

"Our officers will suppress all unlawful rioting and arrest every person suspected of threatening or assaulting a federal law enforcement officer or interfering with federal law enforcement operation," Bondi wrote. "I am further directing the U.S. Attorney's Offices for the District of Oregon and Northern District of Illinois to charge all such persons with the highest provable offense available under the law."

Bondi said the order does not just apply to people caught committing crimes, but also to people who "aids, abets, or
conspires to commit these crimes, whether through funding, coordination, planning, or other means."

The order comes after President Donald Trump signed a memorandum late last week that directs federal agencies to intensify investigations into groups they suspect of supporting political violence.
