Construction workers who were fleeing a site during an Immigration and Customs Enforcement raid Wednesday scaled fencing around the nearby Central Intelligence Agency headquarters in suburban Virginia, according to a news report.

Whether the workers knew they were at the headquarters, in Langley, Virginia, remains unclear.

While none of the workers got near the CIA buildings or posed any threat to intelligence officials, several were detained while scaling the fences, people briefed on the incident told The New York Times

The CIA shut down access to the complex amid the confusion, stranding some intelligence officers in their cars on their way to and within the parking lot.

ICE hadn't informed the CIA of the raid ahead of time.

A CIA spokesman confirmed that law enforcement responded to a security incident at the agency’s headquarters but said additional details would be provided later. ICE did not respond to the Times' request for comment.

Attempting to break into the CIA is a felony offense, but officials did not say if the workers might face any charges. While the immigration or citizenship status of the workers was not made clear to the Times, ICE has been conducting immigration raids over the past several months, arresting illegal immigrants.
