The U.S. Immigration and Customs Enforcement officer accused of running over an illegal immigrant from Mexico was released on a $30,000 bond Monday.

The Harris County District Attorney's Office indicted Mario Alberto Morales last week with the second-degree offense of aggravated assault with a deadly weapon.

Morales appeared in court for a bond hearing on Monday, and his next court hearing is set for Dec. 2, according to his attorney David Lindenmuth, CNN reported.

On Oct. 10, officials were responding to a reported crash involving a pedestrian. ICE agents were looking for a truck with two men inside. According to the Harris County Sheriff's Office, agents spotted a white truck going the wrong way on a road. It came to a complete stop, and two men exited the truck and fled.

One man escaped, but the other, later identified as Miguel Parra Hernandez, was struck by an ICE vehicle. Hernandez was taken to a local hospital, where he underwent surgery for a broken leg.

Harris County District Attorney Sean Teare said at a news conference Friday that the evidence against Morales is "as clear as any I’ve ever prosecuted or investigated."

Lindenmuth accused Teare of being "politically motivated." He told CNN that Morales is a "good man," and it's "offensive" that Teare would pursue the charges.

“You would think he’s a monster based on what you’ve heard from the elected DA,” Lindenmuth said.
