US attorney Jeanine Pirro ends felony charges for carrying registered rifles, shotguns in DC
"We will continue to seize all illegal and unlicensed firearms, and to vigorously prosecute all crimes connected with them," said U.S. Attorney for DC Jeanine Pirro
U.S. Attorney for the District of Columbia Jeanine Pirro has announced the end of pursuing felony charges against people carrying rifles or shotguns in the nation's capital.
D.C. law made it illegal to carry rifles or shotguns in the nation's capital, except in limited cases for permit holders.
Pirro's office makes clear that guns must be registered and that those with a criminal record prohibiting them from possessing a firearm and-or are accused of using a shotgun or rifle in a violent crime will be prosecuted, according to Fox News.
"We will continue to seize all illegal and unlicensed firearms, and to vigorously prosecute all crimes connected with them," Pirro said in a statement.
Pirro said that the new policy is based on guidance from the Justice Department and the Office of Solicitor General.
She also said the updated policy complies with the Supreme Court's decisions to protect gun rights in New York State Rifle & Pistol Association v. Bruen, and in D.C. v. Heller.
