Kennedy slams Democratic Party: 'Democrats systematically obliterated the Bill of Rights'

Health and Human Services Secretary Robert F. Kennedy Jr., blasted the Democratic Party in a scathing speech at the Republican convention in Texas on Thursday night, claiming his former party "obliterated the Bill of Rights." 

Kennedy detailed how the party "systematically" took down the Bill of Rights and reflected on how the Democratic Party of his father, Robert F. Kennedy, and uncle, former President John F. Kennedy, is not the one seen in the country today.

"Our party was a champion for the Bill of Rights, and particularly for unbridled free speech," he said. "My uncle and father understood the connection between free markets and functional democracy. They stood firmly against crony capitalism on the right and socialism on the left. They were all for competition, for meritocracy, and for excellence, which they thought should be a universal aspiration for Americans."

Kennedy claimed that during the Biden administration, his social media accounts were censored in an attempt to curb misinformation during the COVID-19 pandemic and gave liability shields to pharmacuetical giants like Pfizer.

"During COVID, I watched the Democratic Party turn against every one of its essential values, its principles, and all of the policies that defined my party," he insisted. "Democrats, which were once the champions of the American Constitution, systematically obliterated the Bill of Rights, and particularly beginning with the First Amendment, under the guise of combating misinformation." 

The secretary highlighted that Democrats under the Biden administration closed down churches during the pandemic and shut down three million businesses without appropriate compensation and eliminated the Fourth Amendment protection from unlawful searches and seizures by forcing Americans to disclose their medical information.

He additionally claimed Democrats then forced Americans to undergo unwanted medical procedures and shamed those who did not want to take the COVID-19 vaccine.

"The Democratic Party became a party of elites, labeling working Americans as deplorable," he said. 

The health secretary charged the Democratic Party with abandoning its purpose in order to unite behind a blinding hatred of President Donald Trump and said he joined the Trump administration after he failed to bring his party back together.

"I mourn the fact that neither my father nor my uncle would recognize the Democratic Party of today," he said. "In April 2023, I ran for president hoping to summon my party back to its bedrock values. But the Democratic Party had lost faith in American voters and utterly, ironically, lost faith in American democracy."

Kennedy was just one of several major speakers at the 2026 Republican midterm convention in Texas. 

The convention is aimed at promoting Republican policies to boost enthusiasm for GOP candidates in November's elections, which will take place on Nov. 3.
