National Guardsman crashed into car in DC, injuring driver, ticketed for running red light

A National Guardsman was ticketed for running a red light after crashing into a car with a military transport vehicle in Washington, D.C., injuring the driver.

The collision occurred early Wednesday, as one of five National Guard vehicles driving through D.C.'s Capitol Hill neighborhood hit a civilian car, according to the D.C. Guard. The guardsman was driving a Mine-Resistant Ambush Protected All-Terrain Vehicle, CBS News reported.

All five Guard vehicles and a Metropolitan Police Department cruiser stopped to help the driver of the car, who was transported via emergency medical services, the Guard said.

The D.C. Fire Department told CBS News that the driver had minor injuries, but the department used extrication tools to remove the driver from the car.

The Guardsman who hit the car later received a ticket for running a red light during the accident, according to the military's D.C. Joint Task Force on Thursday.

D.C. red light tickets cost $150.

"Our priority is ensuring the well-being of all involved. We are grateful for the response of D.C. police and EMS. Safety is our top priority. We will take action based on the investigation. This type of vehicle is authorized, and safety protocols are in place," Army Col. Larry Doane, commander of the joint task force for D.C., said in a statement.

President Trump deployed the National Guard last week to crack down on crime in D.C.

Nearly 2,000 Guardsmen were activated in D.C. as of Wednesday, including members of the capital's National Guard and forces from six GOP-led states.
