OSC investigates Jack Smith over allegations he played politics with Trump probes: Report
The investigation comes after Republican Arkansas Sen. Tom Cotton urged acting Special Counsel Jamieson Greer to investigate Smith, accusing him of acting in a political manner to undermine Trump in his presidential bid last year.
The Office of Special Counsel (OSC) reportedly opened an investigation on Friday into former Special Counsel Jack Smith over his two probes into President Donald Trump, following allegations he played politics with the cases.
Smith led the criminal investigations into allegations that Trump mishandled classified documents and that his actions on January 6, 2021, were an attempt to overturn the 2020 election. He was never convicted of crimes in either case.
The Hatch Act unit of the OSC is leading the investigation, according to an email reviewed by the New York Post. The unit enforces the law that restricts government employees from engaging in political activities in their official capacities.
The investigation comes after Arkansas Republican Sen. Tom Cotton urged Acting Special Counsel Jamieson Greer to investigate Smith, questioning whether Smith violated federal law by acting in an alleged political manner to undermine Trump in his presidential bid last year.
“I appreciate the Office of Special Counsel taking this seriously and launching an investigation into Jack Smith’s conduct. No one is above the law," Cotton told the outlet. “Jack Smith’s actions were clearly driven to hurt President Trump’s election, and Smith should be held fully accountable."
Smith and the OSC have not yet publicly commented on the new investigation.
