The Department of Homeland Security said Monday that Sudanese and Ukrainian migrants will retain their Temporary Protected Status until the Trump administration makes a decision on ending the status "at the appropriate time."

The designation was set to end Monday for approximately 101,000 Ukrainians and 1,800 Sudanese, according to the Associated Press. The decision to extend protections for Ukrainians comes as the country remains engaged in a war with Russia.

"An announcement on Ukraine’s TPS will be made at the appropriate time," the DHS said on its website. "Until such announcement is made, Ukrainian individuals present in the U.S. under TPS retain protection including work authorization."

The department did not indicate when the decisions would be made or why there was a delay in ending the designations.

The move comes after the Trump administration ended the protections for Haitians, Ethiopians and Somalians, along with migrants from Myanmar, Venezuela and Yemen.
