You Vote: Will President Trump be successful in his effort to close down the Education Dept.?
Many consider the largest obstacle to achieving his goal is getting 60 votes in the Senate to override a filibuster by Democrats, for whom the teachers unions are among their largest financial supporters.
On Thursday, President Donald Trump signed an executive order that is intended to shut down the Department of Education.
The order directs Secretary Linda McMahon to "take all necessary steps to facilitate" the closure of the agency and "return education authority to the States" while also ensuring it keeps delivering services, programs, and benefits, except for those promoting diversity, equity and inclusion or gender ideology, according to Politico.
