Kennedy Center board says the performance venue could close by Tuesday amid looming bankruptcy

The board of directors at Kennedy Center, in Washington, D.C., reportedly says the historic performing arts venue could close as early as Tuesday amid looming bankruptcy.

The financial assessment was made by the board in a 57-page packet obtained by The Washington Post, which published a story on the matter Sunday. The board is set to meet Tuesday on the matter.

Trump since retaking office in 2025 has turned his attention to the center, saying it has fallen into disrepair and chooses "woke" programming. In response, he has in part replaced some board members with his own appointees, and he has been elected board chairman. 

Trump also officially added his name to the building, but that move is tied up in court.

The Trump-led board says the only way to secure funding for the center and avoid fiscal collapse is to return Trump's name to the center, making clear that he wouldn't help otherwise.

Lawyers for Ohio Democrat Rep. Joyce Beatty, who has sued to keep Trump's name off the center, told The Post that Trump is taking the center hostage and threatening to kill it unless he gets his way.
