Law enforcement officials confirmed Thursday afternoon that two people were killed and five were injured in a Florida State University shooting that took place earlier in the day.

The two people who were killed were not students at the school, according to Florida State University Police Chief Jason Trumbower. The five injured have been taken to a hospital, along with the suspected shooter.

The motive for the shooting was not clear, but the suspect has been identified as 20-year-old Phoenix Ikner, the son of a Leon County sheriff's deputy, according to Leon County Sheriff Walter A. McNeil.

The school, in its alert on the social media platform X, said the shooter was believed to be in the area of the campus's student union.

Students at the Florida Panhandle school were initially ordered to shelter in place and to lock doors and windows, but the order was lifted at 3:18 p.m. because law enforcement neutralized the threat.

"Please avoid the Student Union, Bellamy, HCB Classroom Building, Rovetta A&B, Moore Auditorium, Shaw, Pepper, Hecht House and Carraway as they are still considered an active crime scene," the latest alert reads. "Individuals are free to move about other areas of campus."

President Donald Trump has been briefed on the matter.

Florida Attorney General James Uthmeier released a statement that reads: My office is responding to the active shooter situation on FSU’s campus, and we will provide updates as they become available.
