Beaches along East Coast close due to high fecal bacteria levels, putting damper on Labor Day plans

High levels of fecal bacteria has caused the closure of some East Coast beaches during Labor Day weekend.

Earlier in the week, Suffolk County officials closed Benjamin’s Beach in Bay Shore to swimming due to the contamination levels.

Officials said Benjamin’s Beach will reopen after additional testing reveals that bacteria levels have lowered to acceptable levels.

According to the New York Post, other closed beaches include Keyes Memorial Beach in the Cape Cod village of Hyannis in Barnstable, Massachusetts.

Part of the Imperial Beach shoreline near San Diego on the West Coast has also closed.

Some beaches remained open with warnings not to swim in the water due to bacteria levels.
