An off-duty U.S. Border Patrol agent was shot in the face and wounded overnight on Sunday in Fort Washington Park in New York City.

According to ABC News, police said that a suspect is in custody and being investigated for committing the crime.

The shooting occurred at 11:51 p.m. on Saturday.

The Department of Homeland Security (DHS) said the suspect is Francisco Mora Nunez from the Dominican Republic. He was apprehended by Border Patrol in April 2023 at the border and released into the U.S. The agency said that there is an active deportation order tied to his name.

DHS also said that surveillance footage showed that there was an additional suspect involved in the incident.

Trump reacted to the shooting on social media.

"The CBP Officer bravely fought off his attacker, despite his wounds, demonstrating enormous Skill and Courage," he wrote on Sunday.

"The Democrats have flooded our Nation with Criminal Invaders, and now, they must all be thrown out or, in some cases, immediately prosecuted in that we cannot take a chance that they are able to come back. That’s how evil and dangerous they are!" he also wrote.
