Elon Musk vows to support GOP challengers to lawmakers who support megabill as Senate votes on it
Musk, who has been highly critical of the legislation, claimed Republican lawmakers should be ashamed of the massive bill, which stretches over 900 pages. His sharpest criticism is over how high it calls to raise the debt ceiling.
Business and tech titan Elon Musk on Monday gave a stark warning to Republican lawmakers who are trying to pass President Donald Trump's major funding bill and send it to his desk by the July 4 deadline.
The House of Representatives passed their version of the "One, Big Beautiful Bill" last month, but the Senate kicked off its marathon vote on the legislation on Monday. If the Senate is able to pass their version of the bill, it will go back to the House, where it is expected to meet some resistance and likely be further changed. At that point, it would have to go back again to the Senate for approval before going to the Oval Office for final approval.
Musk, who has been highly critical of the legislation, claimed Republican lawmakers should be ashamed of the massive bill, which stretches over 900 pages. His sharpest criticism is over how high it calls to raise the debt ceiling.
"It is obvious with the insane spending of this bill, which increases the debt ceiling by a record FIVE TRILLION DOLLARS that we live in a one-party country – the PORKY PIG PARTY," Musk wrote on X. "Time for a new political party that actually cares about the people."
He also claimed that he would support Republican primary challengers to senators and congressmen who vote to support the bill, despite calling for reduce federal spending.
"Every member of Congress who campaigned on reducing government spending and then immediately voted for the biggest debt increase in history should hang their head in shame," he stated in a subsequent post. "They will lose their primary next year if it is the last thing I do on this Earth."
The warnings come after Musk clashed with Trump over the bill earlier this month, despite previously being close allies. The feud has since cooled, but the pair have not publicly rekindled their friendship.
