Federal disaster declaration expands to eight additional Texas counties
Massive flooding in Texas began last week and has killed at least 120 people across six counties so far. Another 160 people remain missing as of Friday, according to state officials. The highest amount of casualties occurred in Kerr County.
Texas GOP Gov. Greg Abbott on Friday announced that federal disaster assistance related to recent floods in the state will expand beyond Kerr County and will be available to an additional eight counties.
Massive flooding in Texas began last week and has killed at least 120 people across six counties. Another 160 people remain missing as of Friday, according to state officials. The highest number of casualties occurred in Kerr County.
Abbott said that Burnet, San Saba, Tom Green, Travis and Williams counties near Austin will now be eligible for Federal Emergency Management Agency (FEMA) assistance for their residents, and governments in Kendall, Kimble and Menard counties can request grants to help rebuild public infrastructure destroyed by the heavy rain.
“There has been extraordinary collaboration with the state and the federal government to make sure that we address Texans’ needs as quickly as possible through disaster assistance programs," Abbott said in a statement. "The State of Texas will continue to work with our federal and local partners to provide impacted Texans with the support they need to heal and recover."
The announcement comes the same day that President Donald Trump toured the flood damage in Kerr County and met with local residents.
